Educational Programs
Toddler, Preschool, Kindergarten and Primary Programs Through stimulating classes, children with hearing loss learn about themselves as they experience the ever-changing world around them. Our curriculum enhances children's listening, speech and language skills while fostering their social, emotional, cognitive, physical and creative development. Toddler, preschool, kindergarten and primary teachers at Clarke Jacksonville fuel children's minds with ideas and concepts through creative problem solving, discovery, exploration, reasoning, and hands-on activities in preparation for the mainstream.- Children come to Clarke Jacksonville five days a week to learn together in small class sizes of 6 to 8 students.
- Classrooms are designed for the unique acoustical needs of children with hearing loss.
- In addition to being in the classroom, children have listening, speech and language therapy every day which is facilitated by a speech and language pathologist or teacher of the deaf.
- Daily curriculum includes math, art, reading, science, history, dramatic play, free choice, music, and sensory-motor integration which is all taught through a central theme, worked on both in the classroom and in therapy. Specialized activities address the individual needs of every child and family.
Primary ProgramSome children need additional listening, speech and language training before they transition into mainstream schools. Most of the children in the Primary Program have been diagnosed late with a hearing loss. Using a team-teaching approach, one teacher helps children build literacy skills while another covers math, science and social studies. The program enables the Clarke Jacksonville staff to help build skills while moving forward with academic subject matter that children of the same age are learning in mainstream schools.Parents As PartnersParents are strongly encouraged to become partners in the learning process, visit classes and participate in school activities. Classrooms and therapy rooms have observation windows and listening monitors to allow parents and visitors to observe the children and staff without disrupting daily activities. The Clarke Jacksonville Parent Organization, CODE, is an active and supportive group at the school.
