Middle School: Ages 11 to 15

Middle SchoolAt around fifth or sixth grade, kids start asking tough questions: "Who am I? How do I fit in? Where do I belong?" We have many students here who make it to that point in the mainstream and then have fallen behind. We can really help those kids, because we can address those critical issues - self-esteem, confidence, stress management - and help them prepare for the next level.
-Michael O'Connell, co-principal

Middle school is all about transitions - from childhood to adulthood, dependence to independence. It is a wonderful time, and it is a critical time for developing self-confidence, a sense of identity, study habits, and friendships. Our program is flexible and collaborative with emphasis on critical thinking and academic achievement. The middle school curriculum provides many opportunities to showcase their talents, including a science fair, student government, athletics, Poetry Café, and the student-run school store SMALL-MART.

  • Students receive daily instruction in English, reading, auditory/oral communication, math, science, and social studies.
  • We teach conversational skills and appropriate social strategies.
  • Throughout their time in Middle School students prepare for a entry into an appropriate secondary school setting.
  • Mainstream Center staff begins working with students an families at least one year before the student leaves to make it a smooth transition.
