Adjustment Counseling
Students with hearing loss in the mainstream face a significant challenge trying to learn in an environment that was not specifically designed for them. Some students, through their own talents, skills and good fortune, are able to make their way with minimal support. Many students, however, struggle in the mainstream and may need help. Not being able to hear everything that is said in the classroom, on the playground, or in the locker room puts them at risk for falling behind or being left out. It is not uncommon to hear about students who go home frustrated from school each day, knowing they didn't understand much of what the other students learned, or feeling unhappy about their relationships with peers. The Mainstream Center is fortunate to have on its staff an adjustment counselor who is professionally trained to counsel children with hearing loss. John Anderson, a licensed mental health counselor, grew up with hearing loss and attended only mainstream schools. He understands the challenges these children face and has the skills to help them discover the effect hearing loss has on their lives. He is a positive role model, and can show them ways to take care of their academic and social needs while taking care of themselves. Many students, teachers, and schools have already benefited from John's assistance. It is possible he can help you, too. Here are some ways:- Mr. Anderson can do a social assessment of your student.
- He can provide in-school counseling of your student.
- He can consult with your staff about the student's adjustment to hearing loss.
- He can provide in-service training regarding student adjustment issues.
