Audiology
Hearing is essential to learning in all schools, this is especially important in an auditory/oral school. Clarke School Audiology is dedicated to helping each of our students have the best access to sound as possible as we teach our students to listen and talk. Our audiology staff is experienced in the many critical aspects of the habilitation of hearing loss in children. These include: - Assessments of hearing in quiet and in noise for every child
- Programming of digital hearing aids and cochlear implants as needed
- Use of FM and infrared systems in our classrooms to improve audibility of the teacher's voice and other children's voices in class discussions
- Audiological evaluations and recommendations for possible cochlear implantation
- A full-time audiology technician who helps speed repair of students' hearing equipment. As a result, technological problems are very often resolved in minutes, not weeks.
- A well-stock supply of "loaner" hearing aids and implant accessories to minimize amplification down-time.
- Three full-time audiologists, so that each student receives an optimal level of care. A child, at times, may need this care as often as every other day.
These audiological services are supported by years of accumulated experience in an educational setting and an active continuing education program in the latest developments in hearing technology. School Audiology staff members have also lectured on these services at conferences, universities and medical schools.Beyond technology, we monitor the progress of each student through regular assessments, and meetings with our teachers, speech/language pathologists and parents. This information provides insights that help improve the student's program of hearing habilitation.
