Consulting
Most public and private schools in this country have had little, if any, direct experience with students who are deaf or hard-of-hearing. Unfamiliar with hearing loss, hearing aids, cochlear implants and other assistive devices commonly used by these students, it is difficult to grasp immediately the effects that a loss of hearing can have on a student both academically and socially. This makes it challenging to anticipate the needs of these students. A Mainstream Consultant, who is a trained and experienced teacher of the deaf, can help schools become familiar with the learning needs and styles of deaf students. Our Mainstream Consultants work with a school's staff at the invitation of the Special Education Director or the School Head. We believe in the team approach and typically work with the staff to help them understand the effect hearing loss can have on a student's attempts to learn. This includes providing guidance in establishing and maintaining a support system that will aid them and the student; monitoring the student's progress and encouraging her to make the most of her educational and social opportunities; and helping those who work with the student learn how to help her manage her disability. We do not teach the student directly. We also provide support to parents and share with them the experiences of hundreds of other students who have mainstreamed.Consulting services can include:- Program evaluation
