A Guide for Teens with Hearing Loss and the Adults Who Work with Them

What can teens with hearing loss do during the summer months? Can they find and hold jobs or internships, either paid or volunteer, like teens with regular hearing? How can we help them find their way into the work world?
We were asking these questions in Mainstream Services and, as we asked, more questions kept coming. I decided to see where the questions, and answers, led. First, I asked older teens and young adults with hearing loss how it had been for them, and, many had great stories to share. Advice too. Then, workshops were offered about looking for a job, and it quickly became apparent younger teens and preteens benefit from coaching when it comes to identifying their interests and strengths, filling out application forms, preparing for interviews, and grasping the concept of "Selling Yourself." Out of this emerged the need for a guide book as nothing was available, and not only for teens with hearing loss but also for the adults who work with them. Summer Jobs and Beyond is an attempt to fill this need.
